Lectures:

13/6/2017 Week 11
For this week's lecture, we attended a talk by a guest speaker, Kek Feng Lee, to hear him share about his experience. He is a graphic designer and an ex-student at MIA (Malaysian Institute of Art). He is from Melaka and he practices Kung Fu when he was younger before an accident happened and he had to stop. Slowly, he began having interest in art and photography and his career developed from there. He is now based in Netherlands and has done many exhibition all around the globe, in places like Taiwan, Hong Kong, London, Paris and many more. Kek feng has worked with so many events like, NEMO Science Museum, Dongseo University (DSU), Holland Japanese Film Festival and many more. Not to mention, he showed us his processes on how he arrived to the final logo design for NEMO Science Museum, from initial skteches to animation and to the application of the logo.

20/6/2017 Week 12
This week, there wasn't any lecture. I showed Mr. Vinod some sketches of my layout and he asked me to proceed and digitize it. The rest of the class time was for us to work on it.

27/6/2017 Week 13
We no longer have lecture as we are now working on the final project. We then show our lecturer the progression of the poster to get some feedback to do amendments if there are any. Mr Vinod brief us on how the final submission and portfolios should be and he gave us a link as reference.

Instructions:

Final Presentation and Portfolio (40%)
The Brief
Kinetic Typography

Duration of Assignment
2 Weeks (Briefing on week 8)

Deadline
Week 14 (11July 2017)

Description
In this Final Project you may use the font you designed in the previous project and give voice to it. You will be required to choose a statement / poem / quote / dialog / etc. that is suitable to the character and personality of your font.

“Kinetic typography—the technical name for "moving text"—is an animation technique mixing motion and text to express ideas using video animation. This text is presented over time in a manner intended to convey or evoke a particular idea or emotion.” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQ_DRSuk5tk)

You will research, plan and execute a sequence of frames expressing the chosen text using the appropriate software.
Requirements
The student must utilise the accumulated knowledge from the exercises, lectures and from their own reading (library books and online sources) to guide them and inform them in their decisions.

The student must document the process (sketches, trial and errors) in their eporfolio and hardcopy portfolio. The student will be expected to submit the final mock-up in the hardcopy portfolio and the softcopy PDF (and or JPEG) uploaded or embedded unto the eportfolio. Create a separate folder in your Google Drive and store all files, artefacts, project submissions, etc. here.

Ensure all items are logically and chronologically ordered, labelled and dated.

Submission
1. All gathered information (failures, successes, epiphanies, sketches, visual research, printouts, websites, images, charts, etc.) documented logically and chronologically in the A4 Clear Sheet folder. The works must be labelled and dated.
2. All gathered information (failures, successes, epiphanies, sketches, visual research, printouts, websites, images, charts, etc.) documented logically and chronologically in the eportfolio for the duration of the project in one post and for the duration of the course in a separate post as instructed in class.
3. Softcopy of the animation must be uploaded unto the eportfolio or YouTube and embedded in the eportfolio (as directed by your lecturers) while a frame-by-frame JPEG of the kinetic animation must also be uploaded to your eportfolio.
4. The frame-by-frame animation needs to be printed out and documented in the hardcopy portfolio.

Objectives
1. To develop students ability to construct a readable and legible font.
2. To develop students ability to design a font with consistent characteristics.
3. To allow students to experience the various phases of font design.

Feedback:
20/6/2017 Week 12
Further explore and focus on Fig.5c and Fig.5d. For Fig.5c, change up the colour because Mr. Vinod finds it too dull. Try fluorescent colours.

27/6/2017 Week 13
The colour is too harsh for Fig.6a. I must learn to develop your design sensibility using research and understanding to inform your decisions and not overly rely on my decisions and that's how we will learn.

Reflection:
Experience
At the beginning of this project I went to research on posters using online and book source to get an idea of what style I am going for. After that, I sketched a few simple layouts and digitized it in Adobe Illustrator. I did further exploration on my posters and doing amendments here and there. In the process of it, I was lost and procrastinated a lot. Lastly, Mr.Vinod asked me to experiment more on colours because my colour choice was a bit dull. I struggled in colour choice and it was an obstacle for me. Another hardest part of this project was to animate the final poster using Adobe Animate. I really struggled a lot trying to animate it because I have not get the hang of using it yet.

Observation
After this project, I realised it is a lot of work to put everything together, especially with our own designed font. There were so much kerning to do and details to comply which really took a toll on me. However, I believe that I have learned a lot of things in this assignment, from time management to using softwares that I am unfamiliar with. To visualize the poster was easy and I am pretty sure I was ambitious about it until I attempt in executing it, it doesn't always come out the way you think it will.

Findings
The trickiest part this assignment was the kerning I had to do because my font had this weird kerning where it was too condensed and disturbs the legibility of it. Mr. Vinod said the nature of my font is like is such so just go with it and make it happen. I find that researching before starting this project really benefited me a lot because doing blindly without knowledge and inspirations wouldn't do justice to your poster.

Despite the procrastination, it taught me to be spontaneous and stand with our font no matter how much you hated it. I learned that we should never blame the font when it comes to making a poster, the outcome 100% relies on how we execute and display the font and not because the font looks good or bad. After umpteen alterations, I was finally satisfied with my posters. Composition plays a huge role in this project and I had fail a few times in this, as you can see in fig 2a.1, 2b.1 and 2c.1. Animating the poster really was the most painstaking part of this entire project to me because I did not separate them in layers and had to seek help from others.

Books read throughout the assignment:

1)
The Poster
by - (not stated)

This book has contents of poster designs communicated not only through gestures and sound but also by means of a visual language. In this book it has many examples of poster design since the last hundred and thirty years with included typography and the use of some type of illustration. It has taught me that the purpose of the poster has always been to deliver a message. It also shows how the digital era has transformed the world of communication, design and typography.

2)
How to be a graphic designer, without losing your soul
by Adrian Shaughnessy

This book has nothing to do with this project but it was an interesting read worth sharing. This book has advice and guidance on the ethical and practical issues facing designers today. This books offers guidance on employment options straight out of college; setting up as a freelancer; establishing a firm; finding and keeping clients; pitching and generally doing good work. It is a very practical and inspirational user's guide for designer who want to create meaningful work.
